Zakir Patel’s story is one of perseverance, hard work, and a lifelong commitment to serving others. From arriving in Canada as a newcomer to serving families, students, businesses, and communities across Scarborough, Zakir has always believed in giving back.

A Life of Service and Community Leadership

Building a New Life in Canada

Born and raised in Surat, India, Zakir arrived in Ontario in 1995. Like many newcomers, he worked hard, supported his family, and built a new life through sacrifice, determination, and resilience.

Entrepreneurship and Education

In 1999, Zakir purchased his first business in Canada, a local grocery store. While managing business responsibilities, he continued his education at Centennial College’s Progress Campus in Business Administration.

A Commitment to Community

Zakir began volunteering in political and community campaigns in 2003. Over the years, he supported numerous federal, provincial, municipal, and school board campaigns while serving in community leadership roles.

Election to Public Office

In 2018, Zakir was elected as a Toronto District School Board Trustee. His goal was to ensure Scarborough families, students, and communities received the attention and support they deserved.

Leadership at TDSB

From 2018 to 2025, Zakir served in several leadership roles, including Vice-Chair of the Toronto District School Board, Chair of key committees, and Director roles supporting public education governance.

Community Leadership

Zakir continues to support youth, seniors, sports, local organizations, and small businesses. He serves in cricket associations and community initiatives across Scarborough and Ontario.

Arrived in Canada

Zakir arrived in Ontario and settled in Scarborough, beginning a journey of hard work and service.

1999

First Business

Purchased his first local grocery business and gained firsthand experience as a small business owner.

2003

Political Volunteering

Began volunteering in campaigns and community initiatives across Scarborough.

2018

Elected Trustee

Elected as Toronto District School Board Trustee with strong community support.

Today

Continuing Public Service

Advocating for stronger neighbourhoods, better services, youth opportunities, safer communities, and local business growth.
